Song of the day – 242: Viv Albertine (free download)

Decrease Font Size Increase Font Size Text Size Print This Page

The oddest thing about this cautionary tale of Christmas alienation and loneliness with its gently chiding guitars and taut rhythms and repetition, as told by former Slits guitarist Viv Albertine, is that it sounds way, way more like prime Raincoats than it does her former band. There’s the same worrying paranoia and utilisation of vaguely off-key sounds and lyrics: immediately familiar but equally disquieting. It’s great. It really is. Viv continues to strengthen as a songwriter. And it’s mixed by Dennis Bovell even! Like Judy Garland only… actually, let’s leave the phrase at that.

You can find a free download here, totally worth having.
