Song of the day – 225: The Loves

I love to love The Loves. I’ve played this song five times in a row, straight, and still I want to keep listening to it. That bastard Simon still hasn’t sent me that MP3s of their new material, though. Sigh. How am I to linger in femme pop perfection without the music? Oh wait, that’s never been a problem before.

Somehow, it’s the early Eighties again and I’m stuck in a delirious haze watching my favourite film once more, Gregory’s Girl. Of course I have a crush on the wrong girl. This is more Tracey Ullman in love with being in love with the idea of wanting to be in The Ronettes than Tracey Ullman herself. This is, I’m reliably informed (by my wife, who’s as much an expect on femme-led pop music as myself), a combination of Tiffany’s ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ and ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’… which makes it sound a little horrendous, even allowing for the knowledge that ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ was one of the great pop songs of the Eighties. Except it’s not. Horrendous. Because it’s also pure early Pipettes territory. And the sample at the start of this video is, of course, the opening notes of Grease. Lovely touch.

Fortuna Pop! keep releasing the good stuff, that’s for sure.
