M.I.A.'s middle finger

By Brigette Adair Herron

Let’s get one thing straight. Madonna rules my fucking world. I love pop and dance music so much, and it seems completely natural for mother, pop star and sex symbol to fit seamlessly within dance music — a genre that exemplifies Dionysian and Homo-Normative values. It’s playful, fun as hell and, most importantly, it’s NOT BORING. Also, it’s about time that breastfeeding featured prominently in a music video.

I thought it was great that M.I.A. flipped off the camera at the Superbowl. I’ve heard people remark, “Oh, what a 13-year-old boy thing to do!” But you know what? It’s something that 13-year-old girls DON’T get to do. So I say it’s about time.

This one’s for you girls. This one is for 13-year-old Brigette Adair who had to be the most well-behaved on the school drum line full of punk-ass 13-year-old boys because that’s what was expected of her as the only girl. This one is for 23-year-old Brigette Adair who had the head of the Anthropology Department at the University of Georgia chastise her for not immediately enrolling into a graduate program because, “If you don’t hurry up and finish your education, you might miss your chance to have kids”.

Well now it’s my turn to be a punk-ass.

Some people say that little girls are meant to be seen and not heard. Well I say OH BONDAGE, UP YOURS!
