Leila Arab

Looking a little further afield, Antye Greie is a composer, producer, performer and digital artist from Berlin who goes by the moniker AGF. On her debut solo album HEAD SLASH BAUCH she converted fragments of HTML scripts and software handbooks into a form of electronic poetry and deconstructed pop. She has released three albums since (including a collaboration with Sue Costabile). Her live performances are conversions of her poetry into electronic music, pop songs, calligraphy and digital media. Pretentious as that sounds, the resulting glitchy beats are easy on the ear.

Lastly, London’s Leila Arab is originally from Iran. She moved to the UK following the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Label Warp describes her music as “heavily IDM-influenced soul/ambient music”, and Leila has worked with Bjork and Plaid and remixed Acacia as her alter-ego Gramatix. Apparently, her first album was rumoured to be a lost Prince recording. Warp are giving away a free track from her third album here.

There’s little in the example I’ve chosen to evoke his purple-clad perverty highness, but I do like the funky little vocals atop this slightly retro slab of breakbeat pop.

The main conclusion I’ve drawn from this exploration is that there’s some terrific music out there that I didn’t previously know about. So, if my husband asks me why I’ve been so preoccupied lately, I can tell him that my attention has been captured by some very interesting beats.
