There was a remark made by Sean Adams on Twitter the other day regarding music criticism that resonated with me.

[web] 2.0 has seen a shift in perception that anything that isn’t recommendation (or polite) is trolling.

From Wikipedia:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: “That was an excellent troll you posted”. While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, mass media uses troll to describe “a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families

From Urban Dictionary:
One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. ‘you’re nothing but a fanboy’ is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevence to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.

Consider the following:

Gotye – Making Mirrors (Samples ‘n’ Seconds) (Proving that music writers take requests, US-based critic Scott Creney examines the #1 album in Australia. Somebody needs to.)

I’m happy all you jaded hipster douchebag trolls have all found each other and can compete to be the most jaded hipster douchebaggy troll on the internet… or..and just throwing it out there.. you could channel your energies into creating something yourself and here’s the kicker – that people actually like, enjoy and relate to..I know, what sellouts, right? Easier to piss all over others (And trolling is fun, I can see why you all get off on it.) Doesn’t being such rabid cliches bother any of you at all in the slightest?

does anyone else find it really surreal (this was a comment written on Drowned In Sound in response to a link to a Little Joy article)

that a well known and formerly well respected journalist is trolling an internet message board? bizarre…

Eight in 50: Wunderlust, 6s & 7s, The Silents (As part of a new ongoing series on Mess+Noise, EVERETT TRUE reviews eight Australian albums in 50 words or less.)

This article is just a hit and controversy generator and is so far below what my impression of M+N is. But fuck it, it’s entertaining enough, doesn’t matter to me, but I think the label’s and acts would have a right to be shitted at M+N for this sort of thing.

that ‘new’ Radiohead video reviewed in full

Reading the Guardian website this morning and see a link to Everett True. I remember you from the Melody Maker.

Re. that last joke, bit pot and kettle that, given that you’ve not changed your whole Lester Bangs wannabe schtick for nearer 30 years. Honestly, “It’s rock music as mud…”. Yawn, yawn yawn, you’re boring and old and desperate Everett, which I guess is why you’re trying to leverage off Radioheads art to promote your own site.

“Heard about the bloke who liked Coldplay who got mistaken for a music fan?” (a response on a thread started by someone following Everett True on Twitter)

No. Heard about the bloke who liked trolling who got mistaken for a music journalist?

Music Journalism: Opportunistic Idiot-Baiting

Who cares what this wanker says.. If you like the music you like, if you don’t you don’t it is not up to anyone else to tell us what is good and bad!!!

The Horrors – Skying (XL) (Music critic Everett True has a listen to Skying, the new album from The Horrors. Sadly, he’s not very fond of it.)

Nothing on this album sounds like U2. Saying a band sounds like U2 is just a lazy way of insulting them.

Washed Out – Within And Without (Sub Pop) (US music critic Scott Creney’s take on the new Washed Out album? Let them eat sunscreen.)

Scott clearly grew up in a closet, eventually convincing himself that everything outside of that closet was nearly as good.
