Song of the day – 302: Donna Summer

Damn. Now this is what I’m talking about!

Ms. Donna Summer. Even at the time, even at the height of my punk-fuelled rage against anything disco or popular, I loved this song. How could you not? It’s got such energy, such attitude, such singing … funky brass … proto-rapping. If she’d had a band from NYC backing her, wearing skinny ties, doubtless I’d have bought her entire catalogue. As it was, I certainly owned the double album this was taken from, and 12-inch besides: how could you not?

A natural for Beth Ditto to cover, if she hasn’t already.

UPDATE, 18.05.12 (Donna Summer R.I.P.)

And then, of course, there was this – the song that, as Quincy Jones rightfully put it, served as “the heartbeat of a generation”.

I found this statement from her family sad:

Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.

It brought back memories of a controversy that I’d rather not remember right now.
