Triple J Week – Friday 29 October

Decrease Font Size Increase Font Size Text Size Print This Page

And so we reach the end of Triple J week, here on Collapse Board. I won’t write too much today, as I’ll be posting my observations about the combined and crunched data over the next few days.

Australian acts made up just over 50% of the 104 songs played between 9am and 5:30pm today.

Country Total Percentage
Australia 53 50.96%
USA 28 26.92%
UK 16 15.38%
New Zealand 2 1.92%
Sweden 1 0.96%
Canada 1 0.96%
Brazil 1 0.96%
Ethiopia 1 0.96%
Iceland 1 0.96%
Total 104 100.00%

As ever the playlist was dominated by songs from the last few years, with songs from 2009 and 2010 making up almost 84% of what was played. Only four songs from before 2000, only one of these from pre-1996. So which 1977 ‘classic’ did Triple J choose to play? 1977, Silver Jubilee, UK punk at its height. Sex Pistols? Clash? Or maybe a something from the USA. Blondie? Television? Or maybe even a song from (I’m) Stranded by The Saints? Something uber-cool from a pivotal year in music that would appeal to the Australian youth? Close, but no cigar. That is unless you had guessed it would be ‘Lovely Day’ by Bill Withers.

Year Total Percentage
2010 73 70.19%
2009 14 13.46%
2008 2 1.92%
2007 4 3.85%
2006 2 1.92%
2005 2 1.92%
2004 1 0.96%
2003 1 0.96%
2001 1 0.96%
1999 1 0.96%
1996 2 1.92%
1977 1 0.96%
Total 104 100.00%

Maybe someone at Triple J has been reading this series of blog posts as they really spoilt us on Friday by playing a whole six songs from Brisbane, the same as were played from Perth bands. Equal third! Take that Western Australia! Even more than that, Brisbane’s last day haul meant the city’s artists overtook the Canadian bands that they had been behind all week. More stats for the week are on their way soon.

City Total Percentage
Melbourne 21 39.62%
Sydney 12 22.64%
Perth 6 11.32%
Brisbane 6 11.32%
Adelaide 2 3.77%
Canberra 2 3.77%
Gold Coast 1 1.89%
Blue Mountains 1 1.89%
Ballarat 1 1.89%
Newcastle 1 1.89%
Total 53 100.00%

The six Brisbane songs played today (again assuming Washington to be Brisbane, even though she’s probably not) were:

  • ‘Coming Around’  – Hungry Kids Of Hungary
  • ‘Foliage’  – The Honey Month
  • ‘The Space On The Wall’  – Dead Letter Circus
  • ‘Final Day’ – Numbers Radio
  • ‘The Hardest Part’ – Washington
  • ‘Lucky Star’ – Custard
