1. Song of the day – 177: Agent Ribbons (1,539 views)
So this dude emails me from out of nowhere, to tell me that he’s cancelled his subscription to Bust, a magazine he loves and rightly so, because they haven’t yet featured Agent Ribbons, a female trio from Texas that is (in my correspondent’s own impassioned words) “so overwhelmingly Bust-worthy”. So the dude’s cancelled his subscription in some sort of protest – futile passion like that I can always relate to!
2. Song of the day – 176: Sheezer (703 views)
Sheezer are an all-female Weezer covers band from Toronto but… well, you know what I’m going to say already. I prefer them to the original.
3. Song of the day – 202: Edwyn Collins (623 views)
There’s a new Edwyn Collins album out. You don’t know how happy it makes me, just typing those words.
4. Song of the day – 203: Orange Juice (537 views)
Please, note this date: 8 November 2010. Auspicious. Realistic. Wonderful. Domino Records are releasing Coals To Newcastle, a seven-disc box-set of Orange Juice music, in the UK on that very day.
5. Song of the day – 248: Belle And Sebastian (a review) (481 views)
Many of the reviews used the following words somewhere within their descriptive passages: ensemble, chiming, timbre, counterpoint, storytelling, intricate, fictionalised (usually spelled the American way), twee, hiatus, poppy, ethereal, sweet, resonant, romantic, austere. What was truly alarming, however, was the way all the reviews merged into one amorphous voice, saying nothing, very loudly, over and over again. I didn’t want to add my voice to that babble of voices, so I decided not to write the review.
6. Song of the day – 201: Nico’s Bike (480 views)Female vocals chastise. Female vocals jiggle, with fire and fury. Female vocals make like there was no need to record a bad song no not never no how.
7. Song of the day – 182: Pigeonhed (469 views)
I have an awful lot of time for Seattle’s Steve Fisk, and not only because a) people have mistaken us for brothers, b) he’s the only man alive I know that’s grumpier than me, and c) I once appeared in a pick-up band alongside him.
8. Song of the day – 210: The Slits (reprise) (428 views)
“What happened was Palmolive corrupted me,” she laughs. “Palmolive was our first drummer, a real kick-ass Spanish girl, also in The Raincoats, and I was much younger, a little girl, 13, 14, and she got me into it and I thought, ‘Thank you so much, thank you’. I always thought it was OK to shoplift from big stores, not from friends – I never stole from friends, but from a big system. And of course we went second-hand shopping. Punk clothes were hard to get. The Slits really started our own style.”
9. Song of the day – 207: Scarce (free downloads) (402 views)
“Scarce sounded like all those parts of R.E.M. and Bowie that no one is supposed to like. Scarce had such passion and self-belief it hurt” – Everett True, Live Though This (American Rock Music In The 90s)
10. Song of the day – 204: It Sound (373 views)
Do It Sound remind me of West Seattle? Phew. Tough question. Decide for yourselves.
11. Song of the day – 200: The Distractions (366 views)
I would play my vinyl upstairs on my Dansette when my brothers weren’t around, laying out all the seven-inch coloured vinyl on the floor (I stole to finance my habit). I played my 12-inchers and LPs downstairs on my parents’ 70s radiogram, a monstrous, cheap, ridiculously tinny affair – but at least you could stack them. I devoured the music papers with the zeal of a late-come fanatic. All of them, every week. (I also had a day job at a newsagents.) I bought records on the writers’ say-so, and because I liked the covers.
11. Song of the day – 231: Tunabunny (366 views)
Some fellow on Facebook sent me a link. I was immediately attracted by the name – don’t know why, just sounded right. Scrawly-magic. I had a listen to one of the songs on YouTube, and wrote back within 20 seconds, “I don’t need longer than 10 seconds to know that Tunnabunny make PRECISELY the music I love. SEND ME MORE.” So the fellow sent me more.
