More strange beauty from London.

I’ve always been fascinated by fire, the shapes it takes. In Brisbane, I’ll stare into the embers of our stove fire for minutes on end, mostly believing in fire fairies. I love experimenting with the supply of oxygen, taking it right down to the minimum before watching the flames burst into brilliant life again. When I was younger, my fascination took more sinister forms. I would wander back through the streets of Chelmsford dead of night, throwing matches into bushes in the hope of creating a disturbance. (Guess I never thought that one through.) I’d lay petrol trails down corridors, lighting one end when I heard someone coming from the other. I’d set light to my arm, intrigued by the smell of burning hair. One time, I threw a whole bunch of liquid fire into my waste paper bin and watched enthralled as the flames hit the ceiling and threatened not to die down.

As Ondas remind me of several other bands I’ve written about over the years on Collapse Board (you’ll find more than enough leads here) but I particularly like them today because they remind me of fire in Brisbane. Also, they don’t follow a dull male tradition of playing guitars that still holds thrall over most of the indie (Rolling Stone downwards) music press. As ever, I’m in tune with my interpretation not the intention, but I don’t believe folk who make music that sounds like this are bad or unsavoury folk, or even outgoing necessarily. There’s a demo to download here (you choose how much it costs). It sounds totally separate to the video below, but not in a bad way. (There are some great male vocals on the demo, incidentally – especially the song where they sound nothing like All Saints.)

How did people survive before the advent of the em dash?

Here’s the source.
