Vocal trio "The Ronettes" with Phil Spector

I cannot get past this. So, so gorgeous.

I have no idea where this showed up from. And furthermore I have no idea why folk would be going on about The Smile Sessions – as much as I like some of that era Beach Boys – when there’s something like this lurking on the horizon. (Not that music is a competition, of course.) This one track truly is the mother lode of 60s pop. So heartbreaking. So gorgeous.

And this next one … ? Pet Sounds, right? The percussion sounds, the bass, the everything …

I interviewed the Wrecking Crew when I was researching my Ramones book: man, they had some stories.

The blurb under these videos states:

DJ Rick Ward The Adonis of internet radio – is proud to present for the first time anywhere, The Phil Spector Sessions. The whole show is taken from Phil’s original master session tapes. You’ll hear Phil, The engineers, Musicians, outtakes, under & over dubs as they actually occurred. Just like you were really there! It’s a fascinating show and one you won’t want to miss.THE PHIL SPECTOR SESSIONS 4 CD BOX SET IS AN UNAUTHORIZED COLLECTION WHICH, FOR THE FIRST TIME, TAKES YOU BEHIND THE RECORDING SESSIONS, PLANNING, OUTTAKES, UNDER DUBS AND STUDIO CHATTER BETWEEN PHIL AND THE MUSICIANS & SINGERS WHO MADE THE WALL OF SOUND COME TO LIFE. IF YOU ARE A PHIL SPECTOR COLLECTOR THIS IS A MOST HAVE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GREATEST HITS CD WITH PRETTY PICTURES & STORIES DO NOT BUY THIS COLLECTION. THIS SET IS A RARE SET OF THE BEHIND THE SCENES WORKS IN PROGRESS OF “BE MY BABY” “WALKIN IN THE RAIN””UPTOWN” “NOT TOO YOUNG TO GET MARRIED” AND THE WORKS IN PROGRESS OF THE RONETTES, CRYSTALS, DARLENE LOVE, IKE & TINA TURNER, THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS AND MUCH MUCH MORE.

Reads like crazy talk to me. The sort of crazy talk I like. Anyone got any more info on this supposed box set?

P.S. Remind me, and I’ll reprint my face-to-face interview with Ronnie Spector here. OK?

Love that Wrecking Crew backing track. Yes, it is totally “Pet Sounds” and, let’s be honest, much of “Smile Sessions” too. Thanks for sharing that.
