Stature::Statue + Velociraptor + Dune Rats + Horse Fight + Tape/Off @ The Zoo, 28.04.11

It’s the launch night for Stature::Statue’s debut album but also their last show. It seems to happen a lot in Brisbane that bands either make an album and either call it a day soon after (as recently done by The Rocketsmiths) or get most of the way through recording and don’t even get around to finishing it and releasing it before everyone goes there separate ways (Mean Streaks, I’m looking at you!).

But tonight isn’t about Stature::Statue. It’s not about Velocirpator, who put in the most ramshackle performance I’ve seen them play, or Horse Fight or Tape/Off. Tonight, for me, is about Dune Rats. Listening to the band for the first time, it’s hard to put a finger on influences. I’m loathe to compare them to bands like The View or The Libertines (as I’m no big fan of either band) but there’s something in there to make me think of these bands. It’s raw and unpolished, rough around the edges, but with instantaneously catchy hooks and plenty of “oooooohs” and “aaahhhhs” in the backing vocals.

I’m really impressed and buy a copy of their EP, the atrociously named ‘Sexy Beach’. Back home afterwards and checking out their myspace page and other websites where they’ve been mentioned I’m really surprised to find that it’s the singer from Villains Of Wilheim and the drummer from The Cairos; two bands I’ve never really thought much of. It’s disappointing when a couple days later, reports from their Gold Coast show start filtering back via Facebook, with accusations of the band trashing the venue and making a less than impressive name for themselves, with further comments from other promoters that having heard the stories they would be remembering the band’s name to make sure that they didn’t book them in the future. I guess some people can’t help themselves from wanting to live out a true rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle and the clichéd bad behavior that goes with it. It’s a shame, they could do well for themselves but, if the stories are true, making a bad name for yourself in small scenes like Brisbane and the Gold Coast probably isn’t the best way to go about it.

    Hello this is the drummer of Dune Rats. First of all thank you for the kind words about our set. All I want to say is that it is a shame word spreads everywhere about our band being a bunch of dicks. Unfortunately there are some people out there who can’t seem to join in the fun and have to be bitter about another bands success. When we started this band all we have ever wanted to do is not be like every other rude dickhead that seems to be in the industry. We are sad venue promoters remember our name to make sure they don’t book us, however to rule us out over bull shit without even meeting us personally – these probably aren’t the people we want to play for. All the best

    But I’m dying to know Michael – did you trash the venue or not?

    Hahah this is awesome!!! This is Danny and I try to sing in DUNE RATS. Its funny when bands defend things like this but some shit is too good to let slide! Like BC said, no venue trashing. I feel the need to say something cos it was my inability to put up with giant douches that lead me to share a few kind words with the soundy at one of our shows. Thanks for the words and glad you dig the tunes and you’re right, a lot of dicks trash shit and dont give a fuck….but like BC said its fucked up when you dont get the fun of trashing something and just have to hear rumours that stemmed from a sound guy who just bitches and moans about the sound being too loud. I dont think a single piece of equipment has ever been damaged at a DUNE RATS show….other than my own gear. I’mnot aware of any venues who have knocked us back for a show or would…kinda the opposite (awesome to be us right?) so if we could get the names of the venues ill make sure i send them a fruit basket. Lastly if anyone does know this sound guy personally can you tell him i “googled” him like he told me to….nothing came up but a picture of a giant dick.

    So the did the bands play? Essentially this sounds like you didn’t come to the show (not one bit of review) and you really like dune rats.(don’t we all!)
    Maybe review the SHOW next time. This doesn’t fit under the category of review.

    Sincerely yours.
    Eric the Owl.
