Song of the day – 289: Ann Peebles

This was a very popular link on Facebook a couple of days ago.

So I thought I’d share it with you good people too. As Laura Borealis pointed out on another link (Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick In The Wall’, as you were asking), “Disco is a great platform for any message”. It almost seems enough to quote the  handful of lyrics automatically taken across from YouTube and leave it at that… That brass is to cry for, the vocal delivery is so understated and beautifully pained. Killer bass. I know that, dating from 1974 originally, this single probably doesn’t strictly qualify as disco but it’s indelibly associated with that era for me.

I can’t stand the rain Against my window Bringing back sweet memories I can’t stand the rain Against my window Cause he ain’t here with me Hey window pain Tell me, do you remember How sweet it used to be When we were together Everything was so grand Now that we’ve parted There’s just one sound That I just can’t stand
