Song of the day – 329: Giant Drag

I’m new to this band. Dissolute glamour. Heroin chic. Swirling My Bloody Valentine guitars. Attitude fuelled by drugs. It’s been a while since I fell for that.

A tug of the ET beard to Hannah Golightly for this.

Were they too early for Vice? Yes? No? Bet Vice would’ve loved them. Singer smokes ostentatiously as well.

The following song is from their 2003 ‘Lemona’ EP on Wichita. Some of those vocal stylings are SO Valentines-esque it … well, it never ceases to amaze me that most musicians only seem to have a stock supply of around eight bands they listen to. Anyway. I like this one: it’s so immediately and wrongly arrogant about its own worth that I can’t help but fall for it. Maybe I just haven’t listened to this sort of music for a while, and my Bullshit Meter is going awry.

I don’t think so, though. If I’d toured with this band like Madder Rose (say: but an obvious reference point for me) then doubtless some of their songs would be special indeed. Music is all about context and familiarity and WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO LISTEN TO.
