Song of the day – 224: The Psychedelic Furs

I’m putting this up today because it’s the first time I’ve heard these albums (1981’s Talk Talk Talk and 1980′s The Psychedelic Furs) in over 25 years. I used to love the first two Psychedelic Furs’ LPs. (Never listened to them after that.) The sound they achieved on them: something about the vocals: the relentless drums: the clinical dissections of love… what is it? Guitar? Must be the vocals. They sound positively symphonic – or is that the instruments? Never could figure it out. It was that man Steve Lillywhite again. The second album spawned the hits (‘Pretty In Pink’, ‘Into You Like A Train’) and was more fully realised, but I preferred the first for all that, especially the turbulent, churning ‘We Love You’ and album opener ‘India’. And ‘Sister Europe’, of course. It felt nastier, more arrogant (always one of the Furs’ strengths), more visceral and way more brutal. And the saxophone was an asset, not an encumbrance.

Christ, some of those songs were short. If The Psychedelic Furs were existing today, and releasing their debut, there’s no way any of them would have been allowed to slink out in under four minutes.

Here’s ‘We Love You’, plus interview.

It’s the guitars, right?
