Music and the construction of female identity – Brisbane’s street press
Why? I honestly can’t tell you. I had formed a hypothesis about women being placed according to their sexuality which, similar to placing a woman as a wife and mother and sex object, makes her easier to dismiss. But it seems like female artists are all but invisible in the local press, certainly in my investigation. So I’m asking you readers. Is it a symptom of lingering parochialism and the inherent drag that causes on progression of culture? Is it because of sexism in the industry (which wouldn’t be terribly logical, given the large numbers of women working in PR) or sexism in the designation of awards?
What’s your theory?
