Laneway Festival @ RNA Showground, Brisbane, 28.01.12

Let’s weigh up the pros and cons of Laneway 2011 for some of that mathematical precision.

Pros: good line-up; friendly crowds; non-awful food; under cover.

Cons: shortened sets; variable sound quality; crappy timetable; poor communication.

I didn’t hate it, which is about as close to a recommendation as you’re going to get from me. There wasn’t anyone on the bill I wouldn’t rather have seen playing a proper concert on their own, but it made me despise being an Australian much less than going to Parklife does.

There’s your quote for next year’s posters, Laneway:

It made me despise being an Australian much less than going to Parklife does.

I missed it this year but Laneway is a nice little festival that each year brings out a bunch of middle level bands from overseas that are interesting but who wouldn’t make the lineups of the big festivals for whatever reasons plus someone like Jay Reatard or Daniel Johnston.

They do it at a reasonable cost and [in Brisbane at least] in a reasonable setting. The crowd is good. The beer is relatively cheap, and it’s 200 mt to the Valley afterwards at 10.30pm if you want to keep on doing stuff.

    What’s not to like.

It’s taken an unflattering photo and a typically snarky comment on Collapseboard for it to happen, but I’ve finally been called a ‘real photographer’.

Now I know how Pinocchio felt when he became a real boy!

“Was every other angry cunt in Brisbane busy today?” asks Rave”

    Gold!

Good storyyy. I enjoyed the festival and I agree with most things – that wait for M83 was tiring. And the $3 sausage and bread = BADASS. It was the most gratifying thing that day until I went to bed. Those cattle sheds are not made for a live show though I must say.. need dem ear plugs.

“I really have pissed in his cornflakes by wearing this wristband.”

    Classic! Really an entertaining review.
