Riot Grrrl Melody Maker cover

Excerpted from DIY Queer Feminist (Sub)cultural Resistance in the UK by Julia Downes.

“It has really saddened me recently to see all this fuss and hype over what is basically a right on press man’s invention. I am talking of course, about this Riot Grrrl revolution that has hit our shores … Where is it, ET? … Thanks to you ET, the music industry and especially my precious Maker, has become a vehicle for right-on crap music bollocks that pushes aside any other form of new music that does not conform to your revolutionary agenda … You are killing music, just as Stalin killed communism.”

She’s right, though: Huggy Bear WERE right-on crap music bollocks.*

On the other hand, I’m trying to work out how the House of Pain fitted into MM’s evil Stalinist agenda.

I found out recently that Daisy Chainsaw are suddenly the hipsters’ band of choice. I always said that they were underrated, but isn’t that heaping indignity onto cruelty?

Oddly enough, that’s how I recorded my one collaboration with Huggy Bear (still unreleased). A Frank Sinatra cover.

    And whither Ned’s and Fred?

There are legendary early Huggy Bear demos that were recorded with Matthew Fletcher (of Heavenly) that I am dying to hear, but remain inaccessible… As a former flatmate, did you hear this material and is it as stellar as I imagine?
