Triple K!
JEZZA, MAAAATTTTEEEE… you’re turning into a Queenslander, bless you. IT’S OKAY THOUGH. IT’S OKAY.
Interesting tweets from Urthboy and Dom Alessio:
urthboy – I was supposed to be at this #amp announcement this morning.
domalessio – Me too! I wonder what people will make of the Short List? RT @urthboy I was supposed to be at this #amp announcement this morning.
urthboy – @domalessio ppl will think it’s more of the same – at least this is what I’m hearing
urthboy – i sat on the #amp judging committee. 1/2 of the shortlisted artists were discussed. the other 1/2 went thru w/out any discussion
urthboy – the undiscussed records went thru automatically as they’d been the ‘most’ favourited before the day (via email)
urthboy – cant believe only 7 hip hop acts entered the #amp
I think I might put some money on a hip hop act winning next year’s AMP as it’s obviously their turn in 2012…
The truest line of this entire rant was, “Maybe it’s just me.”
Sorry you were overlooked, but maybe it is a case of YOU not THEM.
Music isn’t a comp – but it’s a great way to acknowledge the great talent that exists in this country. It’s great inspiration for those nominated and aspiration for those who weren’t.
And as if Dom Alessio WOULDN’T be a judge… i mean, the guy IS Australian music and knows his stuff inside out.
Stop being bitter please, it doesn’t look any good on you.
What are you talking about Sally? I wasn’t overlooked. a) I didn’t enter, and b) I didn’t release an album last year. But yes, of course Mr Alessio knows his stuff inside out. In fact, he knows his stuff so inside out he’s willing to give two, entirely contradictory, opinions on albums he ‘reviews’.
I think Sally might have missed the point…
Overlooked for being a judge Everett. Sorry I had to spell that out for you. I’ll speak slower next time.
I speak for a lot of us when I say you HAVE to let Alessio’s review of A&J Stone go. Seriously. We get it. 99.9% of the time the dude gets things right – just let it go already. It’s making you sound dated.
I didn’t get overlooked, Sally. I was asked.
were you?
I got the impression I was being encouraged to put my name forward by – er – yourself during a discussion on Mess And Noise last year, but clearly I must have read that wrong. Nice to see you’re proud of your little indie music business cliques, Chris.
(Of course I read that wrong. I don’t drink in the right Sydney and Melbourne pubs. How could I have overlooked that?)
i reckon the last time i went drinking in the “right” melbourne pub with music biz people was about 1991 mate.
i am involved in no cliques, not any more.
just trying to clear up whether we ever actually asked you to be a judge or not.
No, you didn’t. Not as such. You suggested that perhaps I could put my name forward to be considered if I cared that much about the award – a suggestion we both knew would not be taken seriously.
P.S. The ‘pubs’ line is an analogy. At least, I hope it is. I’d be shocked if it was actually true.
Maybe it’s just me but I’m finding it hard to comprehend why people are having trouble understanding this and why on earth anyone would need to put forward an alternative shortlist to make any argument against the AMP shortlist a valid one. (BTW has anyone gone back to Urthboy for an opinion? After all he broke ranks to criticise the awards and as the token hip hop judge he’s probably in the best position to put forward a list of what hip hop albums should have been included).
According to the AMP’s website “The Amp was founded in the spirit of the UK’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize…”, and whilst the MMP is always accused of tokenism by including jazz, classical, folk, soul and pop albums, at least it’s acknowledging that there is music outside of white indie rock and at least the likes of Talvin Singh, Roni Size, Ms Dynamite and Speech Debelle have won the award.
Again from the AMP’s own website: “The Amp is unique in Australia – a critically judged award which honors contemporary Australian artists based on their creative excellence. Any artist has the opportunity to be Shortlisted and potentially to win – regardless of record sales, genre, level of public recognition or record label affiliation”.
The AMP nailed their colours to the mast in the first year and nothing has changed. What’s worse than that is that in doing what they’ve done they’ve made it sure that it never will change. They’ve redefined the “Music” in their name as “white indie rock as played by 25 – 35 year olds from Sydney and Melbourne who wouldn’t be out of place being played on triple j during the daytime”. And when you have a panel of predominantly white, 25- 35 year old judges from Sydney or Melbourne who have similar looking record collections and either listen to triple j, are in bands who are played/supported by or who work for triple j, you’re going to end up with roughly the same shortlist every year.
If you play classical, jazz, soul, reggae, blues or indigenous music are you really going to bother to apply and pay your $95 knowing that you have no chance of making the list and that you’re just throwing away good money plus the cost of all the CDs you need to supply and all the time and effort doing it?
I don’t need to put forward a list of classical, jazz, soul, reggae, blues or indigenous albums that should have made the shortlist in order to recognise that the AMP represents the narrowest of genres and this is a serious failing. Or are the people requiring this validation saying that Australia is a cultural wasteland incapable of producing any music outside of indie?
Oh lord. I get the impression Everett is holding a grunge.
FYI My Disco didn’t submit their album for judging.
Which is a pity because it’s absof**kinglutely dynamite, as you know (it all)
