[Editor's note: unfortunately, a glitch on the Collapse Board motherboard seems to be preventing contributors from posting up entries. So by the time I saw this, the show had already happened. D'oh! Still. Thought it was worth shoving up anyway. Go see 'em next time they play instead! Apologies to all concerned - Ed]
House parties seem to be the new space where bands are performing nowadays. While there is a trade off, sound quality for intimacy and authenticity, these are usually pretty damn enjoyable. Last weekend, I got to catch a new female-dominated garage rock band, The Louie Louies, play their first gig inside a friend’s house in Ashgrove. They play their second gig tonight (December 2nd) at Rics Café supporting Jake Donehue & the Disgruntled Taxpayers.
The band proves that three girls and one guy in a band do not necessarily equal The Corrs, something blatantly obvious by their choice of genre – a sort of dirty blues-influenced garage rock. When guitarist Dave told his mother about him going a band with three other girls, she had some reservations.
“Mum, I’m in a new band. It’s me and three gorgeous young women”
“David, that’s not a band, that’s a wet dream.”
They feature Eliza (vocals), Sarah (drums), Sophia (bass) and the aforementioned Dave on guitar. They have an affinity for Bowie, Patti Smith, The Kinks, Kerry O’Brien and lemon and ginger tea, and take their name from that famous Kingsmen song. They have quirky and provocative songs, such as ‘Sex Tips
For Girls’, which takes its name from a book that Sarah and Eliza used to have on their coffee table. It is, I’m told, the essential guide for all women, containing vital knowledge such as ‘Don’t point and laugh’. The song is often dedicated to Julia Gillard. Other songs are more esoteric, such as ‘Judy Give My Books Back’. Presumably this Judy stole Sex Tips For Girls and the band want it back.
My alcohol-damaged recollection doesn’t serve me well for acutely describing the songs the Louis Louies played, save that they were freaking awesome and
that you should probably check them out.
look forward to it!
you forgot the most important part. how many songs before dave ripped his shirt off.
